Horry County coroner identifies man who drown in Myrtle Beach

A 44-year-old man died after drowning early Sunday morning in Myrtle Beach.

The Horry County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Jason Tompkins.

Myrtle Beach police responded to an initial call of cardiac arrest near 29th Avenue South and Ocean Boulevard around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Witnesses say they saw the man floating face down in about a foot of water and dragged him onshore to perform CPR, according to a police report.

Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue continued CPR and then took the victim to South Strand Hospital, the report states. Police scanned the beach for unattended belongings but didn’t find any.

Officers spoke to a witness who told them she and her family saw a man, who matched the victim’s description, swimming about an hour earlier, according to the report. She also told police the man didn’t seem to have any difficulty swimming.
