Motorcyclist killed by vehicle that left the scene of a crash on S.C. 9 Saturday night

A 55-year-old Little River man died in a vehicle accident Saturday night, according to the Horry County Coroner’s Office.

Charles Mechling died form injuries sustained in a hit-and-run incident, authorities said.

Mechling was driving a 1997 Harley-Davidson motorcycle at approximately 9 p.m. going south on S.C. 9 near GP Smith Avenue when it was struck by an unknown vehicle that left the scene, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell. The unknown vehicle was also traveling south on S.C. 9.

Mechling was the only one on the motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet, Tidwell said.

The SCHP continues to investigate the incident and asks anyone with information on the incident to contact them at 843-661-4705.
