An alligator was seen in this Surfside Beach lake. Here’s what we know about it.

There’s an alligator in Dogwood Lake in Surfside Beach, and officials are asking folks to keep their distance.

David Lucas, regional public information coordinator with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, told The Sun News that a small alligator was found in the lake, located between 10th Avenue North and 14th Avenue North near Cedar and Dogwood streets. Lucas said signs are being erected warning people about the gator’s presence.

While signs will be placed around the just over half-mile area, the alligator won’t be removed from the lake due to its smaller size at less than 5 feet. Lucas said an alligator that small wouldn’t pose much of a threat to the public.

“The alligator is on the small side,” Lucas said. “It was determined it didn’t need to be removed.”

Earlier in the day, Surfside Beach officials posted on their Facebook page there was an alligator in the body of water, explaining the town’s public works department was working with DNR to find a solution.

The signs urge those to keep their distance from the lake, to refrain from trying to feed the alligator and not to swim in the water.
