76-year-old drowns while trying to help rescue another swimmer, Horry County officials say

A 76-year-old man drowned while trying to help rescue another swimmer, according to the Horry County coroner’s office.

Rescue crews responded to the oceanfront in Garden City around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of an unresponsive man, according to the coroner’s office. The victim was taken to Tidelands Waccamaw Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Initial reports were that the victim was trying to help rescue another distressed swimmer at the time of his drowning, according to the coroner’s office.

The victim was identified as Anthony McAleenan of Willowbrook, Illinois.

Tuesday was the day after Hurricane Isaias passed near South Carolina and emergency crews warned about dangerous swimming conditions during and after the storm.
