Myrtle Beach crews suspended search for missing swimmer ahead of hurricane’s arrival

Myrtle Beach crews searched for a missing swimmer as Hurricane Isaias moves into the area.

Around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, crews went to 28th Avenue South and the beach for a missing swimmer. The victim was about 100 yards out in the water, hit by a wave and wasn’t seen, according to police radio traffic.

Myrtle Beach fire crews had jet skis in the water searching for the swimmer.

About 100 people gathered on the beach to watch the scene.

On Monday morning, Myrtle Beach Fire Lt. Jonathan Evans said he believed crews suspended the search overnight and the U.S. Coast Guard took over the case.

Larger waves than normal have been in the area as Hurricane Isaias heads towards South Carolina. Forecasters have also warned of rip currents as a result of the storm system.

Hurricane Isaias is expected to have its greatest impacts on the Myrtle Beach area on Monday night into Tuesday morning.
