Dozens displaced, several buildings damaged after campground fire outside of Myrtle Beach

Several buildings were significantly damaged in a fire at Ocean Lakes Family Campground Friday morning.

Horry County Fire Rescue crews responded to the campground around 4:45 a.m. for the blaze. Firefighters called the blaze a three-alarm fire and evacuated nearby residences. Ocean Lakes Family Campground is off South Kings Highway outside of Myrtle Beach.

Spokesman Tony Casey said ten units were damaged by the fire, at least four had significant damage. Six vehicles and another six golf cars were damaged.

There were 45 people who were displaced because of the fire, Casey said.

Two firefighters went to the hospital with minor injuries, Casey said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Taylor Garrity lives next to the Ocean Lakes campground and said they saw the first fire around 4:45 a.m. A few hours after the blaze, Garrity said the scene had calmed down a bit and some of the firefighters had left the area.

“We were in shock for sure,” Garrity said of seeing the large fire.
