One dead, several people hurt after car crashes into building, Myrtle Beach officials say

One person died and several people were hurt Thursday after a car crashed into a Myrtle Beach medical building, sending glass and debris flying into the people inside.

Myrtle Beach police Cpl. Thomas Vest said the person killed was inside the building on 82nd Parkway when the car collided with the front entrance.

Several other people went to nearby Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment. Some of the victims were described as “walking wounded” who were injured from falling debris.

Police and fire crews went to 945 82nd Pkwy. around noon after the car crashed into the building. Vest said they don’t know why the driver crashed into the building. The driver was one of the people who went to the hospital.

“Right now, we have multiple injuries from patients that were in the building,” said Lt. Jonathan Evans, with the Myrtle Beach Fire Department. “There is some falling glass and things from the atrium that got hit.”

The extent of the other injuries is unknown.

Fire crews were at the scene to ensure the building was structurally OK, Evans said.

Dozens of Myrtle Beach fire, Myrtle Beach police and Horry County Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene. Police asked people to avoid the area while they treated the victims.

The first firefighters who arrived on the scene described the incident as a “mass casualty” situation on police radio traffic.
