National airline suspends flights into Myrtle Beach, citing coronavirus-related downturns

Tourism season is underway along the Grand Strand, but one airline won’t be bringing visitors this year.

United Airlines is suspending services to Myrtle Beach next month due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a statement from the company.

“In accordance with the CARES Act grant, the U.S. Department of Transportation has authorized United to temporarily suspend service to Myrtle Beach, effective July 6, due to demand conditions related to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the statement reads.

Since the pandemic began, airline travel has seen a steep decline. The CARES act included funding to help support the industry through the economic downturn. The U.S. DOT decided last month that several airlines could reduce their services due to the lull in business.

United offered seasonal direct flights into Myrtle Beach International Airport from Chicago and Newark, N.J., according to the Myrtle Beach airport’s website.

Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Karen Riordan said a vast majority of Myrtle Beach’s tourism comes by car or through other airlines that will still be bringing in tourists.

“We are back trying to push non-stop air service from those carriers sticking with us,” Riordan said. “Our number two services carriers are Allegiant and Spirit. They have a very robust schedule.”

A daily list of flights arriving and departing from Myrtle Beach can be found on the airport’s website.
