Conway hopes to reopen summer camps after coronavirus delayed plans

Conway could try to reopen its summer youth camps on June 29 if current plans hold, City Administrator Adam Emrick said.

The camps were closed when an employee in the city’s parks and recreation department tested positive for the coronavirus.

Now, the city is ramping up tests of its employees . Over the last two weeks, nearly 70 Conway employees have been tested.

Mayor Barbara Blain-Bellamy tested positive for the virus, and she and her husband are doing better. She attended the virtual city council meeting on Monday.

Other employees in the parks and recreation department tested negative, opening up the staff to potentially reopen the camps.

Emrick said he knows parents need child care and hopes the summer camps can get people back to work.

Earlier plans to reopen the camps included changes to the functions and operations to promote social distancing and keep kids safe.

Members of council reminded the public to please wear masks. Blain-Bellamy would like to see more masks required while engaging with city staff.

“I am a victim of COVID-19. This is not a time to relax,” Blain-Bellamy said. “It takes great care to keep yourself safe from COVID.”
