Some Horry County voters were given the wrong ballots. Here’s what we know
Ken and Sherry Redding went to cast their ballots Tuesday morning in the South Carolina primary, but after they left, they realized the Horry County School Board District Four race was not on their ballots despite living in the district.
And they’re not alone. Ian Guerin, a District 4 County Council candidate, tweeted out this morning that voters were being given the wrong ballots. He has heard from six voters who believe they got the wrong ballots. The most recent complaint he heard was around 10:30 a.m.
A couple combined precincts are reporting issues with voters being given the wrong ballots, according to other reports from candidates. The issue was reportedly fixed by lunchtime.
“From what I’m hearing this isn’t a huge overwhelming issue, but everyone’s vote should be counted and it should be counted properly,” Guerin said.
Horry County Elections Director Sandy Martin could not be reached for comment.
Guerin said he was told poll workers are addressing the problem, and that it wasn’t widespread. When he voted at 11 a.m., there weren’t any issues. He reminded voters to check their sample ballots before heading to the polls to make sure their actual ballot matches.
You can find a sample ballot online at SCVotes.org. Again, while the issue is reportedly fixed, it only takes a moment to make sure you receive the right ballot. If you have a problem at the polls, you can call the elections office at 843-915-5440.
Polls will be open until 7 p.m.
Ken Redding said he notified the Horry County elections office but hasn’t heard of anyone having the chance to cast another ballot. He said he thinks it’s only fair people get a chance to cast a ballot in the right race.
“I’d love to get the chance to vote again,” Redding said. “What if you want to vote for Cox or Nowlin? It’s unfair to them, too.”
