Another set of king tides expected along the Grand Strand this week

Extreme spring tides, also known as king tides, are forecast to rise for three days in the Myrtle Beach area beginning Thursday, according to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources tide table chart.

Higher-than-average tides are predicted to roll in Thursday evening and last through Saturday, with the highest king tides being Thursday and Friday evenings. The times of high tides range depending on specific locations along the Grand Strand.

King tides happen when the Earth, moon and sun are aligned during a new or full moon while the moon is as close as it gets to the Earth during its orbit. There will be a full moon Friday night.

Tides can cause coastal flooding in low-lying areas and heavy rainfall during king tides can cause more flooding.

The next set of king tides is not expected until August, tide tables show.
