Dangerous aquatic life warning: Man o’ war ‘swarms’ possible in Myrtle Beach area

Swarms of Portuguese man o’ war jellyfish are possible along Horry County beaches, according to the National Weather Service.

A beach hazards statement was in effect through Monday evening and the NWS warned swimmers to remain out of the ocean to avoid hazardous swimming conditions.

North Myrtle Beach flew purple flags to warn beachgoers of dangerous aquatic life, said Pat Dowling, the city’s spokesperson.

Man o’ war jellyfish are venomous and can have tentacles up to 30-feet long, which can still sting after they have died. The jellyfish began washing up along the Grand Strand shoreline last week.
