Myrtle Beach enacts curfew: Residents ordered to stay home, visitors to stay in hotels
Myrtle Beach will have a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in light of recent protests over police brutality, city officials confirmed.
The curfew will be in place Sunday night through the Monday morning hours.
The regulations mean that city residents are to stay in the homes, visitors to stay in their hotels and businesses will be strongly encouraged to close, Mayor Brenda Bethune said.
Myrtle Beach declared a civil emergency on Sunday afternoon in the wake of threats of violence related to protests. Myrtle Beach police Cpl. Thomas Vest said the department received a specific threat.
Areas such as Columbia, Charleston and Raleigh, North Carolina, saw protests turn violent in the last few days.
About a hundred people gathered in Myrtle Beach on Sunday morning for a march against police brutality in the wake of the death of George Floyd in Minnesota. A video showed a police officer putting his knee across Floyd’s neck during an arrest, as the suspect said he could not breathe.
Myrtle Beach’s Sunday morning protest was peaceful as the group marched from Plyer Park to the Myrtle Beach police department and back. The group chanted “Black Lives Matter,” “no justice, no peace” and “hands up, don’t shoot” as they marched along the road.
