New North Myrtle Beach restaurant and bar hangs hat on sports, big portions and family fun

Michael Calhoon describes himself as a college sports enthusiast.

He’s expecting his new North Myrtle Beach business to be an extension of that.

Calhoon’s 19th Hole Saloon, located at 2203 US-17 S, held a soft opening this weekend and is planning to have a grand opening sometime this week.

“It’s a place where you can bring the kids and family and have a good time,” Calhoon said of the restaurant and sports bar.

Calhoon, who retired in January from his post as a chief deputy outside of Pittsburgh, where he and his family have lived while having another residence in Myrtle Beach for 22 years, said the sports bar naturally will have some semblance of the Pennsylvania city in which he’d worked so long while noting fans of all kinds of sports will find representation there. Pennants repping teams from all over the country accompany the bar.

“I just love college basketball, especially the ACC’s North Carolina teams, and the NCAA tournament. That’s one of my favorite times of the year,” said Calhoon, who was born in Charleston and has also spent time coaching and doing sports radio. “I’m also a big fan of SEC football.”

Calhoon said the bar has 15 60-inch flatscreen televisions, cornhole on the patio, which will host karaoke and eventually include a Jumbotron, while noting the establishment will offer special deals on beer for happy hour. Calhoon said all major pay-per-view sporting events will be shown in the sports bar.

As far as food, the restaurant features Braveheart brand burgers and steaks that are served in heavy portions, square-cut pizza, Pittsburgh-style salads, Ohio Valley sandwiches, wings and other typical bar food.

“You’ll be filled up after leaving here,” Calhoon said.

Calhoon’s is open daily Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. to close, with the kitchen operating until 11 p.m. each night.
