This downtown Myrtle Beach restaurant and bar is reopening with new owners, features
Greg Messcher and Ryan Weatherwax purchased Gordo’s Tacos & Tequila in January with the intention of reopening the downtown Myrtle Beach restaurant and bar by St. Patrick’s Day weekend in mid-March.
The coronavirus COVID-19 derailed those plans.
So the co-owners used what turned out to be two forced extra months of preparation to renovate the building and property a block from the ocean on 9th Avenue North.
“We did a bunch of remodeling we were planning to do next offseason,” Messcher said.
Gordo’s will reopen on Wednesday with a Tex-Mex menu that includes tacos, burritos, burrito bowls and fajitas, and a bar that features 75 different kinds of tequila.
The restaurant’s enhanced look includes a redesigned bar, cartoonish Day of the Dead black light murals on walls, a colorful mosaic wall, new lighting, repainted exterior in bright colors, lighted display case behind the bar for the multitude of tequilas, and multi-colored outside tables created out of what had been 4-foot long rectangular planters.
It has a pair of large hanging pinatas, a low-rider bicycle that spins in a circle from the ceiling in the middle of the bar, new video and grab games for children, and a jukebox. The prevailing music will be Hispanic.
Gordo’s also has a rearranged kitchen configuration and underwent a deep cleaning.
“At first we started pulling everything out and giving it a deep, deep cleaning,” Messcher said. “When we found out we had an extra couple months, that’s when we put all the work and elbow grease into it.”
Gordo’s originally opened in 2016 and Messcher and Weatherwax purchased it from BondFire Restaurant Group.
They own and operate other bars and restaurants in the area, including the Hungry Turtle and Toasted Turtle at the Sun N Sands Resort, and Beach Pit at Carolina Winds Resort.
Messcher also owns or co-owns Harry The Hats, The Office and 39th Ave. Bar and Grill.
