A new coronavirus drive-up testing location could open at CCU next month
Coronavirus testing in Horry County could become a lot easier and widespread next month in an effort to better understand the extent of the pandemic in South Carolina.
Coastal Carolina University President David DeCenzo said the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control told the university that a proposed drive-up testing facility could come to campus in June.
“It is not just for the university but for the whole area,” DeCenzo said.
These testing center proposal would allow for widespread, rapid testing from the inside of your car as opposed to entering the hospital. Results are typically returned within a couple of days.
The center would open as South Carolina tries to ramp up testing across the whole state in an attempt to test 2 percent of the population. Anyone who thinks they may have the virus is encouraged to get tested.
Tests are how the public and health officials know the amount of confirmed cases in the area. It could also help promote confidence that some areas are safe to visit. DeCenzo said while the whole community will have access to it, the increased testing would help the university reopen.
As of Thursday evening, Horry County has 278 confirmed cases.
