King tides have returned to the Myrtle Beach area. Here’s the latest

King tides have returned to the Myrtle Beach area, bringing higher-than-normal tides to coastal areas.

The tides are expected to last through Saturday, and the highest tide predicted was Thursday evening on the Grand Strand, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control tide tables.

This set of king tides is the second of the year, DHEC tide tables state. The next set of king tides are expected near the beginning of June.

King tides, or perigean spring tides, happen when the Earth, moon and sun align during a new or full moon while the moon is as close as it gets to the Earth during its orbit. Impacts of the higher tides include flooding in low-lying coastal areas.

The tide tables for coastal South Carolina can be found online with times of highest tides depending on the area.
