More Horry County residents seek unemployment as economy slowly reopens

More Horry County residents filed for unemployment benefits even as some stores reopened over the past week, according to the Department of Employment and Workforce.

There were 5,745 new claims filed by locals seeking benefits during the week ending on April 24. This brings the total of unemployment applications from Horry County to 46,570 since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in March.

While additional people are seeking benefits, the number of new applications has decreased for a second straight week. These numbers reflect the number of applications submitted to the state seeking unemployment, not the amount of people currently receiving benefits.

Horry County was third highest in filings this week and among the highest during the pandemic as emergency measures brought the tourist economy to a halt.

Across the state, South Carolina saw 65,159 new people seek unemployment benefits. Since March, more than 406,000 have filed for unemployment due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Greenville County now leads the state overall with 47,821 claims filed in the last six weeks.
