Several rounds of severe weather possible for Myrtle Beach area, latest forecast states
The Myrtle Beach area is facing the potential for several rounds of severe weather beginning this afternoon and continuing through Monday morning, according to the latest information from the National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina.
- The first round is likely to hit northeast and southeast South Carolina between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. today in a scattered and disorganized fashion, forecasters say.
- After a short break, another round is likely to take place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday with more widespread rain.
- The final round is forecast for 6 a.m. to noon Monday in the form of a linear system.
Sunday’s forecast calls for an increased risk in the southern portion of the state, though the whole coast faces the potential for severe weather in each round of the storms. The primary threat will be damaging winds in excess of 60 mph and isolated tornadoes, the NWS reports. The possibility for hail is forecast to be mainly for 1 p.m.-7 p.m. today and again Monday morning.
The weather service advises that flooding is also possible, especially in northeast South Carolina, as 1.5-3 inches of rain is expected. Damaging winds will pose a threat to outdoor tents and other temporary structures, the NWS warns.
Also, a small craft advisory will begin at noon today and continue through midnight Tuesday as sustained winds of 15-25 knots are expected as well as Gale-force winds possible across coastal waters with seas at 5-10 feet expected.
No watches or warnings have been put in place, but the NWS states that they may be required, especially late tonight and in the morning.
