Myrtle Beach airport to receive millions in aid from coronavirus relief bill

Flights into and out of Myrtle Beach are way down as the coronavirus pandemic continues to restrict travel and the tourism industry.

But the federal government is stepping in to help the Myrtle Beach International Airport.

Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao announced on Tuesday that MYR will receive $19,281,057 to help the airport get through the economic downturn.

The money can be used on capital improvement projects, payroll, utilities and other operating expenses, according to a release from the Federal Aviation Administration.

In total, more than $97 million was allocated to airports across the state. The money comes from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security act approved by Congress and signed by President Donald Trump.

The economic relief bill also included more funding for unemployment, direct payments of $1,200 to many citizens and relief for small businesses.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated how much money was going to airports across the country. The story has been updated.
