Dancing bunnies, light show: Myrtle Beach officials spread positive vibes amid coronavirus
Mark Kruea was admittedly surprised when he learned he was being portrayed as a dancing bunny on an eCard posted on Facebook by the City of Myrtle Beach on Saturday morning.
“They told me after the fact that I was going to be doing the bunny hop. It’s definitely humorous,” the city’s public information director said with a laugh Saturday afternoon. “You’ve got to see the funny side of life and it certainly does have a funny element to it. Hopefully the public will see that as a little bit of sunshine on an otherwise dark day. Hopefully they’ll get a kick out of it.
“I also hope that it shows we still manage to keep our sense of humor.”
Kruea said he wasn’t sure from whom within the city government the jibjab.com video, which can be seen at https://bit.ly/2XtPvdC, originated. The video features the faces of Mayor Brenda Bethune, City Manager John Pedersen, Police Chief Amy Prock, Fire Chief Tom Gwyer and Kruea on top of bunny suits that dance to “Every Bunny Dance Now.” Kruea’s hope is that the humor shines a little positivity during an Easter weekend that’s atypical amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“We’re trying to keep a positive attitude, to help other people keep a good attitude, to support the good work our health care professionals are doing,” he said. “It’s a challenging time for everybody. We’re just looking for sunshine behind the clouds right now.”
The Myrtle Beach police and fire departments also took action to spread a positive vibe Saturday morning by turning on their vehicles’ lights and giving a round of applause to “the real heroes” at Grand Strand Medical Center during a shift change.
“Thank you to all of our medical staff who have been working tirelessly through this pandemic!” the Myrtle Beach Fire Department stated in a Facebook post.
“What a great show of support for other front-line personnel,” Kruea said. “From one front-line group — our police and firefighters — to the health care professionals who are not always on the front line but they certainly are at the moment. It’s just a big show of support and thanks for everything that they’ve been doing and the risks that they’ve been taking.”
