Myrtle Beach firefighters battle blaze at rental complex on 6th Avenue North
Nobody was injured after a fire at a Myrtle Beach rental complex on Monday night.
Fire crews went to 308 6th Ave. North around 10 p.m. for the reported blaze. Neighbors saw flames coming from the Noel Motor Court as police and fire crews arrived at the scene. Myrtle Beach Fire Lt. Jonathan Evans said there were two people inside rentals when the fire started, but they escaped. He didn’t know if they went to the hospital.
Marquis Jenkins and Shadwayne Cole, who live nearby, saw the fire and ran over to help.
“He said ‘Oh my god,’ [then] the house is on fire,” Jenkins said. “I saw the smoke coming up, it was a small flame.“
Jenkins and Cole said when they ran to the hotel they helped one man who they knew took sleeping pills. They were concerned as a pill can knock him out until the next day.
“There was really one in particular I was worried about,” Jenkins said. “I just didn’t want him to get caught up in there and get smoke inhalation and possibly die.”
They also helped another person get bags out of their room as the area filled with smoke.
“I was like, ‘Leave that bag, like let’s go.’” Cole said. The two said they were also worried because there were nearby propane tanks that made loud “booms,” and they eventually ran back to safety once everyone got out and police arrived.
About a dozen fire trucks and police cars were at the scene. A crowd of people gathered to watch crews fight the fire and check the rooms. 6th Avenue North was blocked for hours while emergency responders were in the area.
