Body found in Georgetown County identified as former Pawleys Island Planning Chairman
The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office announced Saturday afternoon that the body found near East Bay Park has been identified as Coy James “Jimmy” McCants, the former Pawleys Island Planning Commission Chairman who’s been missing since March 9.
Investigators were able to identify the body based on physical appearance, clothing and a photo ID, the sheriff’s office reports. McCants was 84 year old.
Beachgoers discovered a body around 2:43 p.m. Saturday and reported it to police.
“We are thankful for the family who found the body and called authorities,” Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver said in a news release. “We are also thankful for the citizens of Georgetown County for all their help in the search along with the participating agencies: Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, Midway Fire Rescue, Georgetown County and Georgetown City Fire, the Georgetown County Technical Rescue Team, S.C. Department of Natural Resources, the State Law Enforcement Division and the U.S. Coast Guard.
“I am sorry this is the outcome but, hopefully, this will help give the McCants family closure.”
Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson is assisting police with the investigation, and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday at Grand Strand Medical Center, where a cause of death will be determined.
