Why the Socastee and Little River swing bridges are closed, and when they should reopen

Both the Socastee and Little River swing bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway are closed for repairs, and are expected to reopen by Saturday morning.

A contractor is working on the mechanical systems of both bridges for the South Carolina Department of Transportation, according to SCDOT District Mechanical Engineer Lorena Pate.

The jobs were expected to be quick, but the contractor found both bridges needed extra work to get them back into operation, Pate said.

The Socastee bridge on Dick Pond Road was closed to vehicular traffic Monday and was supposed to be reopen Tuesday but is now expected to reopen Friday night.

The Little River bridge on Sea Mountain Highway initially closed to water traffic, then closed to vehicular traffic on Wednesday and is expected to reopen on Saturday morning.

The SCDOT has been updating the closures on the road conditions page of its website.
