Coastal Grand Mall, North Myrtle Beach restaurants handed low health inspection grades
Grand Strand restaurants violated health department rules, causing both eateries to receive low food grades, including one that involved an employee mopping out a refrigerator, according to inspection reports.
South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control inspectors gave the low scores to a North Myrtle Beach restaurant and a Coastal Grand Mall food court spot during routine inspections over the last week.
The department conducts inspections based on what it calls a “snapshot in time” of retail food establishments’ employee behavior and preparation practices. Inspections are annually or quarterly, depending on the restaurant’s food processes and compliance history, according to DHEC.
An inspector visited Moto’s, at 2302 N. Ocean Blvd. in North Myrtle Beach, Jan. 23 and handed the restaurant an 85 percent score after seeing an employee use a dirty mop to clean out the interior of a make-top refrigerator, the inspection states. The report states food was removed prior to mopping, but placed right back into the cooler without any further cleaning or sanitation procedures.
The restaurant also was not following proper hot-holding temperatures and had precooked chicken wings, cooked potatoes and cooked roast beef without date markings, according to the inspection. An inspector deducted more points because Moto’s had grease build-up along the cook line equipment and food matter build-up on cooler shelves.
On Tuesday, China Express, in the Coastal Grand Mall food court in Myrtle Beach, was slapped with an 83 percent score. The restaurant was not following proper hot-holding and cold-holding temperatures and there was no date marking on cut cabbage, the report states.
China Express also had cooked chicken stored in a bus pan in the walk-in cooler, with a stainless bowl of grilled chicken sitting on top, causing the restaurant to lose points, the inspection states.
