Where South Carolina ranks among states with the highest percentage of 65-plus populations

If wisdom comes from experience, then South Carolina is one of the wisest states in the country. The Palmetto State is among the top 10 states with the largest 65-plus populations, according to seniorliving.org.

South Carolina took 10th place for having the highest percentage of people over the age of 65 years old. More then 17 percent of the state is older than 65. More than 5 million people total are estimated to live in the state, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Maine took first place with Florida in at a close second. Both states have more than 20 percent of their population in an age range higher than 65.

Researchers took demographic data from the census and Centers for Disease Control to determine the rankings and to make future projections. The study that said by 2030, nearly 20 percent of all Americans will be over the age of 65.
