Addiction and recovery on the Grand Strand: Celebrity doctor to visit HGTC

A celebrity television doctor is visiting the Grand Strand to talk about addiction and recovery.

Dr. Drew Pinsky will bring his knowledge to Horry-Georgetown Technical College on March 12 to headline the college’s annual Addiction and Recovery Series.

“Dr. Drew is a very popular personality and should draw a large crowd this year,” said HGTC Professor Casey King, who started the event 13 years ago. “As a person in long-term recovery — almost 15 years for me — what drives me to host the series every year is an urge to give something back to the local recovery community.”

King said he encourages anyone interested in the topics to attend, and you don’t have to be in recovery to enjoy the series.

Pinksy’s visit is one of four events in the lecture series at HGTC. All events are from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Burroughs & Chapin Auditorium on HGTC’s campus, and each event is free and open to the public.

Here is the list of events for the series:

  • Feb. 20: Grand Strand Health, FAVOR-Grand Strand, Shoreline and Lighthouse will give “creative and thought-provoking demonstrations” of recovery.
  • Feb. 27: A panel of HGTC students, faculty and staff who are in recovery from various addictions will speak about their walk to recovery and how they maintain it on a daily basis.
  • March 5: Bob Forrest, a musician and featured on VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,” will speak about his journey and struggle with addiction.
  • March 12: Dr. Drew Pinsky

Ahead of the March 12 lecture is a five-course dinner with Pinsky and funds will go to the series. Dinner tickets are $100 and tax deductible.

HGTC’s Addiction and Recovery Series started in 2008 by King to increase the public’s awareness of recovery, educate folks on the biology and psychological basis that drives addictions and reduce the stigma toward those in recovery.
