SCDMV wants to make it easier on Grand Strand residents to get a ‘real ID’ next week

If you’re boarding an airplane in 2020, you’re going to need a “Real ID” to do so after October.

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is opening up a mobile office next week in Myrtle Beach to help you get a new, real identification card.

The new ID will have a star on it proving it’s “real.” It can be purchased as your drivers license or as a simple identification card without driving privileges. The cards can last up to eight years and will also be required to enter secure federal buildings or a military instillation.

Prices for the IDs run in the $12 to $25 range. While some can purchase their new identification card online, others are required to buy in person. You can check your online-registration eligibility on the DMV’s website.

DMV officials will help folks get a new ID at the Myrtle Beach Train Depot, 851 Broadway St., this Monday from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. You’ll need to bring proof of a social security number, proof of identity and two documents proving you live in South Carolina.

If you stop by to get a new ID, there will also be officials explaining the new South Carolina voting system. It is a paper-based system that prints off your ballot after you choose your candidates off a computer screen. It was used in the 2019 municipal elections with few problems reported across Horry County.
