Man punched in face after telling husband he wanted to spend Christmas alone, police say

A man punched his husband in the face on Christmas Day after a heated argument resulted in the victim wanting to spend the holiday alone, according to a Myrtle Beach police report.

Robert Burgess, 40, was arrested and charged with third-degree domestic violence.

Police responded to a reported assault at the Calypso Motor Inn in Myrtle Beach around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, police found Burgess smoking outside the hotel confused as to why the police were called, explaining that he and his husband had a “Christmas disagreement,” according the report.

Burgess invited officers into his motel room where they spoke to his husband of 10 years in private, according to the report. The victim told police the pair started arguing after he told his husband he wanted to spend Christmas alone, but the heated exchange resulted in Burgess punching him in the face, the report states.

Burgess told police he had pushed his husband, but later admitted to punching him after officers noticed the inside of the victim’s mouth was cut and swollen. Burgess added the victim had punched him in the eye the week prior, but there was no sign of injury, according to police.

While the victim requested officers forget the incident and chalk it up to just an argument, police explained the physical altercation and the nature of their relationship would result in domestic violence charge, the report states.
