Here’s why a Surfside Beach sandwich shop scored low in a routine health inspection
A Surfside Beach sandwich shop received a low score during a health inspection this week for having black build-up in the ice machine and storing to-go boxes on the floor, according to an inspection report.
Firehouse Subs, at 1610 Highway 17 Business, scored an 80 percent grade in a South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control routine inspection Monday.
The sub spot lost points for having an inaccessible hand sink for employees, black build-up inside the walls of the ice machine, not following proper cold-holding temperatures, having chemicals stored between gloves and a scale used for food preparation and not having adequate refrigeration, according to the inspection report.
An inspector also noted the establishment had pickles stored under water lines below plumbing and under a soap dispenser. To-go boxes were stored on the floor in the back prep area and there was build-up on the floors throughout the facility, the report states.
DHEC conducts inspections annually or quarterly, depending on the establishment’s food processes and compliance history. Inspections are considered a “snapshot in time” of the retail food establishments’ employee behavior and preparation practice.
