The newest section of the Waccamaw Neck Bikeway was formally opened Thursday afternoon after Bike the Neck Chairwoman Linda Ketron, joined by state, county and school officials, cut the ribbon at Waccamaw Elementary School.
About 75 people rode the path to the Waccamaw Library where they were greeted with water, Bike the Neck T-shirts and a bike safety check by mechanics from Cyclopedia Bicycle Shop.
The crowd cheered when a smiling Lily Grant, 7, arrived, completing her first bicycle ride.
The separated path runs south along Kings River Road from Willbrook Boulevard to Waverly Road and then east along Waverly to Waccamaw Elementary School.
The construction cost of the project was $1,492,751 and was funded by GSATS funds, SCDOT funds, Georgetown County matching funds, Bike the Neck contributions and a Safe Routes to School grant.
The completed section connects the school with several communities and the Waccamaw Library.
