Following sewage pipe break North Myrtle Beach officials close portion of beach
A portion of the beach in North Myrtle Beach at Sixth Avenue South is closed following a sewage spill, officials said at 10:15 a.m. Monday.
A 500-foot wide section of beach is closed to swimming after a sewer pipe break was discovered Monday morning, said Pat Dowling, North Myrtle Beach city spokesman. The pipe is connected to a small pump station and the break allowed between 300 and 400 gallons of sewage into the water before it was discovered and fixed.
Coastal Carolina University officials planned to take water samples in the area on Monday and state Department of Health and Environmental Control officials will take samples on Tuesday, Dowling said.
