The cause of the fire that burned down a 10-unit apartment complex building in the Island Green Country Club community in Murrells Inlet Friday night was said to be due to “improperly discarded smoking materials,” said to Brian VanAernem, battalion chief with Horry County Fire Rescue on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters responded to the blaze about 9 p.m. Friday to the apartment building at 1230 White Tree Lane, VanAernem said.

The Murrells Inlet/Garden City Beach Fire Department aided Horry County firefighters, along with Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue firefighters.

VanAernem said one person was taken to a local hospital, but he said it was unknown at the time if the cause for them going had to do with the fire.

The person’s condition was unknown as of Saturday morning, according to VanAernem.

Residents of the apartment building were evacuated, but VanAernem did not know how many people were displaced by the fire Saturday morning.

More details will be available as soon as they are available.
