Coast RTA to introduce CEO candidate to county
The Coast RTA board is expected to introduce Brian Piascik, the transit’s choice for next general manager, to Horry County’s administration committee Thursday.
Piascik was announced as the next chief earlier this month until the Horry County Council balked at the claim, stating it needed to review terms of the contract before it was signed.
Horry County and Coast RTA has an active funding agreement that outlines the requirements Coast must meet in order to receive $1.05 million in annual funding from the county. Among those requirements includes the county review of the contract for the transit’s next chief executive officer.
Military Appreciation Days
Myrtle Beach’s Military Appreciation Days begin this weekend with a tribute to veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars Saturday.
The tribute, organized by Rolling Thunder SC3, will be held noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the social hall at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 3301 33rd Ave. N. Extension in Myrtle Beach.
The tribute is the first in a series of events sponsored by Myrtle Beach to honor veterans. Other events this month include a salute to Vietnam War veterans that begins May 14, a parade featuring Grand Marshal J.R. Martinez on May 16, and a veterans march on Ocean Boulevard on Memorial Day.

Run to the roses
Bob Baffert-trained horses American Pharoah and Dortmund are the early favorites heading into Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
Post time is 6:24 p.m. for the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown series. Coverage begins on CBS at 4 p.m.
‘Fight of the century’
The long-anticipated fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather is just days away, and the event is expected to be the richest fight in boxing history.
The cost to watch Saturday’s bout, expected to begin around midnight, is $99.95 via pay-per-view. Undercard action begins at 10 p.m.
Draft day
The NFL draft kicks off with the first round beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, followed by the second and third rounds Friday (7 p.m.) and fourth-seventh rounds Saturday (noon).
Blessing of the Inlet
The 18th annual Blessing of the Inlet will be held Saturday in Murrells Inlet.
The event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Belin United Methodist Church. The blessing ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m.
The free event features include family fun, food from several are restaurants and various craft vendors.
Prep playoffs
The postseason begins this week for area high school baseball and softball teams.
Class A, AA and AAAA begin play Thursday, while AAA teams begin Friday.
Tourism director to visit Grand Strand
Duane Parrish, director of the S.C. Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, will meet with with business owners during an event 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Friday at the conference center at Barefoot Resort.
The talk is part of the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce’s First Friday Business Builder event.
