Cyclist dies after fatal crash with ‘unknown vehicle’

A bicyclist was killed after an “unknown vehicle” ran into the bike around 3 a.m. on Fraser Street/U.S. Highway 17 near Mt. Zion Road in Georgetown County Tuesday.

“The cyclist was not wearing any type of reflective equipment,” said Lance Cpl. Matt Southern of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The car that hit the bicyclist fled the scene and has not been identified at this time, Southern said.

Both the bike and car were traveling northbound on U.S. 17 when the car hit the bike, he said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol and its Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call the Highway Patrol at 1-800-768-1505.
