Officials: Two sent for treatment after explosion in residential area

An explosion just outside Georgetown city limits has sent two people to the hospital.

According to Georgetown County Fire/EMS assistant chief Tony Hucks, a man was transported by ambulance to Charleston after sustaining burns to the face. Another woman standing nearby was sent to Tidelands Health Georgetown Memorial Hospital after suffering minor injuries.

“Apparently, the gentleman was cutting the top off a 55-gallon barrel,” Hucks said, “and while doing so he interacted with some old oil residue that caused the explosion.”

Their condition is currently unknown.

The explosion occurred at a Calhoun Street residence shortly before 5 p.m., Hucks said. Fortunately, damage was limited to the property on which it occurred.

“It kind of made us curious, because there are no body shops in that area,” Hucks said. “My guess is he just somehow acquired the barrel.”
