Opioid overdoses killed 101 people in Horry County – higher than any other county in the state, last year.
Many advocates for addiction recovery agree that more beds and addiction treatment centers are desperately needed to stem the tide of this rising death toll. But there are agencies out there, now, offering help and hope:
Center of Hope of Myrtle Beach, LLC
Center of HOPE of Myrtle Beach is an outpatient opioid treatment program located in Myrtle Beach. The agency provides medication-assisted treatment using methadone or suboxone, combined with individual counseling and group therapy, to help people with opioid addictions stop using illicit drugs, according to the Horry County Coalition page. All individuals receive an assessment, health and physical, lab work, ECG and physician’s appointment prior to admission to determine the need for services.

Referrals: Counselors on staff are available by phone. Assessments are conducted on a walk-in basis on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with intakes on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Individuals, who call in advance, receive priority.
Coastal Recovery Center (for adults) and New Journey SDG (for adolescents)
Coastal Recovery Center is a private, not-for-profit, outpatient addictions treatment center for adults. New Journey SDG - a division of Coastal Recovery and 836 Ministries - offers outpatient adolescent addictions treatment for ages 12 to 17. Programs use spiritual principles, modern medical practices and professional counseling services to treat addictions. Services include outpatient medical detoxification, medical stabilization, medical exams, full psychosocial assessments, individual counseling, group counseling, family counseling/interventions, psychiatric consulting and more.

Martha’s House
Martha's House is a not-for-profit organization providing Christian aftercare to formerly incarcerated women once they are released from jail or prison. Martha's House is based in Georgetown County, but serves both Georgetown and Horry counties. It provides a structured 6 to 12 month program, with a primary emphasis on drug and alcohol addition recovery.

New Directions
New Directions can provide emergency and transitional shelter for up to 236 homeless men, women and families each night in four Myrtle Beach shelters. Programs focus on moving people out of poverty and homelessness through rehabilitation from addiction and chronic illness/disability; job readiness training; then moving clients into independent living by assisting with permanent housing, according to the agency.

LRADAC Addiction Treatment Center
LRADAC is a non-profit agency in Columbia and is one of 33 county alcohol and drug abuse authorities recognized by the state of South Carolina. It’s network of direct service agencies provides prevention, intervention and treatment programs to citizens in all 46 counties of the state. The center offers inpatient and outpatient services.

S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation Department
The S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation Department (VR) prepares people with disabilities to become qualified candidates for employment by using in-depth assessment, disability management, job readiness courses and hands-on training, according to the Heroin Coalition. VR has two treatment facilities which specialize in substance abuse services, providing residential long-term treatment options for those who enroll in its program. VR also has a Comprehensive Evaluation Center which assists clients in discovering their potential and helps them begin developing their vocational strengths and abilities. If needed, pain management sessions are available.

Financial: There is no cost for substance abuse treatment at VR’s substance abuse facilities for VR clients.
Referrals: Clients are referred to substance abuse treatment by VR counselors at any of its area offices around the state. Treatment is voluntary and participants must be substance free for at least three days before admission. VR does not provide detoxification services.
Pre-requisites: Each applicant must meet all criteria below to be eligible for vocational rehabilitation services. They are:
- The individual has a physical or mental impairment. (VR considers alcohol and substance abuse an impairment.)
- The individual’s impairment results in a substantial impediment to employment.
- The individual requires vocational rehabilitation services to prepare for, secure, retain or regain employment.
- The individual can benefit in terms of employment outcome from the provision of vocational rehabilitation services.
Shoreline Behavioral Health Services
Shoreline Behavioral Health Services (SBHS) is a non-profit agency that receives funding, in addition to insurance and client fees, from state and federal funds designated for the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders, according to the Horry County Heroin Coalition. Services are provided to individuals and families in the Horry County area and surrounding counties.

Financial: Individualized payment plans are available for anyone in need. Shoreline accepts Medicaid and all other insurances apart from Medicare and VA insurance (TriCare).
Referral: Referrals are taken from area social service agencies, physicians, etc. and referral information can be provided or potential clients can be instructed to come in during Shoreline’s walk-in hours on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Addict’s Mom
The Addict’s Mom (TAM) is a non-profit organization offering assistance online and in-person to mothers and other family members struggling with a loved one who suffers from addiction. TAM offers members the chance to share experiences, sorrows and victories in an open and honest environment through programs such as: TAM Grieving Moms, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, Medication-Assisted Treatment, and Moms of Incarcerated Children.

Waccamaw Center for Mental Health
Waccamaw Center for Mental Health provides outpatient mental health services to children, adolescents, adults and their families who suffer from mental illness in Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties. The agency provides individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, psychiatric assessments for medication and ongoing medication follow-ups, along with crisis intervention to those who are in acute crisis and need inpatient hospitalization for mental illness or substance use issues.

Financial: Many insurances are accepted including Medicaid, Medicare, managed care organizations and private insurance. The center will work with individuals with no insurance/limited income on payment plans to pay for services.
Referral: Referrals are screened to determine appropriateness for services and assessed by a mental health professional to determine type of services needed. Walk-in screenings available from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday to determine appropriateness for services. Phone screenings also available.
Prerequisites: Persons who are experiencing a psychiatric crisis, have a history of mental illness or prior treatment for mental disorders are eligible for mental health services. Persons who are suffering both co-occurring disorders of mental illness and substance abuse are also eligible for services.
