Brunswick County Literacy Council hosting spelling bee to raise funds for reading
Spelling bees aren’t just for elementary schoolers anymore.
The Brunswick County Literacy Council is hosting its annual spelling bee on May 11 to raise funds to support reading, writing, math and technology skills in adults.
“Being able to spell words is important to being literate,” said Deanne Neuman, council board member. “If you can’t read, you can’t really survive.”
Teams of two adults have 20 seconds to collaborate with each other and 15 seconds to spell a word given by the pronouncer. Contestants who misspell a word are eliminated, and teams will go head-to-head until only one duo remains.
Awards also will also be given to teams with the best spirit and best costumes.
Teams must register by May 1, and the $250 registration fee can be paid by either the team or a sponsor. Teams can recruit their own sponsors or the council will match sponsors to each team, if needed. To volunteer for this event or to become a sponsor, call 910-754-7323 or visit www.bcliteracy.org.
Participants and audience members also can bid in the Super Silent A-to-Z Silent Auction before the bee starting at 6 p.m. Items up for bidding range from diamond earrings to restaurant gift cards; all auction items can be viewed and bid upon before May 11 by visiting www.bcliteracy.org.
All the auction items are donated, and monetary donations will also be accepted at the bee, Neuman said.
“The more resources we have, the more people we can help,” she said.
The bee begins at 7 p.m. and will be held at Odell Williamson Auditorium’s Virginia Williamson Event Center on the Brunswick Community College main campus. For more information, contact the council at 910-754-7323.
“Everyone is going to have a good time if they come,” Neuman said. “It may not be the Final Four, but we’ve got our own gaggle of contestants going on.”
