WalletHub.com, a site dedicated to helping people make better financial decisions, ranked South Carolina the 8th best state in which to be a taxpayer, according to a report released Wednesday.

The report said that South Carolina ranked 5th best for real estate tax, 14th for sales and excise tax, 22nd for income tax and 43rd for vehicle property tax.

The report said that South Carolinians pay an average of $984 a year in real estate taxes, $1,897 in sales and excise taxes, $1,235 in income taxes and $416 in vehicle property taxes.

The state ranks just behind number six Tennessee and ahead of number eight California in the overall rankings, according to the report. Alaska was rated the best state for taxpayers.

With average annual state and local taxes of $4,532 per taxpayer per year, the report said, South Carolinians pay 20 percent below the national average for overall tax burden.
