The Waccamaw River is on the rise, but the crest is a couple of days away

A flood warning has been issued after the Waccamaw River in Conway continued to climb following rains brought in by Irma, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C.

The warning was issued overnight and is in effect until further notice as the river is expected to reach minor flood stage later Tuesday.

“People with interests along the river should take the necessary precautions to protect life and property from the flood waters,” a briefing from the NWS said.

The river sat at about 10.81 feet at about 2:15 a.m., creeping close to minor flood stage, which is 11 feet, according to the weather service. Minor flooding is in the forecast, and the river is expected to crest around 11.7 feet by Thursday or Friday.
