Horry County amends tent ordinance to allow for weddings, small pop-up tents

Restricting beach tents has been discussed since 2013 by officials in Horry County and surrounding communities, and on Tuesday, County Council members voted to ease the restrictions.

The changes still won’t allow big canopy-style tents, but tents will be allowed for organized events and for small children.

The following are different scenarios where the tents are allowed and not allowed:

Our family wants to spend the day in the shade

We have a small child

We’re getting married

We have an elderly family member

We’re planning a special event

The original ordinance, approved by council last spring, banned canopy-style beach tents on county-run beaches year-round. Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach approved bans of their own between May and September, and those bans have not been relaxed.

This amendment will allow child-sized pop-up tents and those who apply for special event permits, which would include weddings, to put up tents for a certain amount of time. County officials received calls, which prompted the changes.
