Hurricane-damaged bridge on Highway 19 to be demolished, rebuilt

The bridge on Highway 19 near Conway that has remained closed since Hurricane Matthew is now under construction and state transportation officials say work should be completed by November.

State highway crews will begin clearing and bridge demolition activities Friday, so motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes or the dedicated detours to navigate around the site.

In addition, the closed bridge on Old Georgetown Road is also undergoing construction work and is expected to be completed in November.

Those bridges have remained closed since the hurricane struck in October.

The emergency contract was awarded by the state in late December to Carolina Bridge Company, Inc. to design and construct the new bridges and approaching roadways.
