Newborn baby found in trash bag at Claflin University

News outlets are reporting a newborn baby was found near a dumpster on Claflin University’s campus Wednesday morning.

The Orangeburg Department of Public Safety confirmed employees at the university discovered a baby boy alive in a trash bag, the Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported.

The baby’s condition was unknown late Wednesday.

The newspaper reported the baby was transported to a hospital and police are investigating. WLTX of Columbia reported it is unclear who the child belongs to.

Under S.C.’s Daniel’s Law, infants up to 60 days old can be legally abandoned at a safe haven.

Safe havens are defined as hospitals, hospital outpatient facilities, law enforcement agencies, fire stations, emergency medical services stations or houses of worship while staff are working.
