More than 60 state roads, bridges — including those in Horry and Georgetown — still closed after Matthew

jlee@thesunnews

More than two weeks after Hurricane Matthew hit South Carolina there are still more than 60 state roads and bridges closed because of storm damage and flooding.

The state Department of Transportation reports that 55 roads and 6 bridges remained closed Sunday. The department expects about 20 of them to reopen to traffic before Thanksgiving.

Most of the closed roads and bridges are in Dillon and Horry counties.

The department reports that the Socastee swing bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in Horry County is again operating and boat traffic can pass.

Almost 100,000 cubic yards of storm debris has been removed from state roads and highways since Matthew hit.

SCDOT is working to repair infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Matthew. In addition to infrastructure repair, SCDOT is also leading a significant effort to remove storm related debris.

Damage assessment teams continue to review infrastructure damage and prepare estimates and quantities necessary to perform repairs using in-house and contractor forces. SCDOT bridge inspectors are also working to assess support structures for damage, and other conditions such as scour.
