Georgetown County officials relying on satellite phone to communicate

Telephone service and cellphone signals are down in Georgetown County, forcing officials to rely on a satellite phone for communication.

“We're currently having significant communications issues,” said Jackie Broach, the public information officer for Georgetown County.

“All county phones are down and issues being experienced by Verizon have put many county cellphones out of commission as well,” she said.

The county has moved its public information team to a mobile command center outside of its emergency operations center. The team can be reached at the satellite number the county has been using for its disaster call center at 843-765-4289.
