Purple Feet Festival features Lucy Look-a-Like contest
From the time the Purple Feet Festival began more than a dozen years ago at Silver Coast Winery in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., the audience has enjoyed the Lucy Look-A-Like contest. Entrants stomp the grapes and parade in their costumes with the only qualification being the contestants dress like Lucille Ball. In the past children have earned Little Miss Lucy, Lil’ Lucy, and a man won 1st runner-up in 2005. Some entrants have dyed their hair red or wore a red wig. Others have scoured thrift stores for the appropriate costume.
At 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17 the parade of competitors will entertain the crowd by answering questions Silver Coast Winery owner Maryann Azzato hurls their way. “We’re looking to have a whole bunch of Lucys,” she says and urges people to put on their Lucy costumes and come to the festival. “It’s so much fun,” she says. After the questions and parade, the audience decides the winner.
New at the festival this year is “Kids ZONE.” Bouncy house and a slide will keep the children active. They can visit the Fire Prevention Safety House to learn tips on fire safety in the home, courtesy of Grissettown Longwood Fire & Rescue. Popcorn and cotton candy are other treats for them.
Another addition this year is a lower entry fee when visitors bring four-to-six nonperishable food items. Donations go to Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which includes Brunswick County. The goal is to collect 10,000 pounds, which equals 8,500 meals.
Arts and craft vendors will sell their wares and food trucks and
food vendors will provide popular fare. Tony Reese as master of
ceremonies will introduce the program with music by the Imitations.
As always, the winemaker will give winery tours.
People are urged to bring lawn chairs, but pets, coolers and
outside beverages are not allowed.
