Horry Schools updates quarantine guidance. Here’s how long isolation lasts under new rules
Following guidance from state and federal health entities, Horry County Schools has changed its guidance for students and staff who test positive for the coronavirus.
Late last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control shortened the quarantine period from 10 days to five for people who test positive, with the stipulation that the infected person wears a mask for five days after ending isolation.
HCS will follow suit, according to an email sent to district parents and guardians Tuesday morning and provided to The Sun News.
The district will require masks for those who test positive and return to school during days six to 10 after exposure.
“Mask enforcement will be challenging, but we will ask parents to assist us with mask requirements for days 6-10,” HCS spokesperson Lisa Bourcier wrote in an email to The Sun News.
HCS now requires students who have been exposed to the virus to quarantine for 10 days if they’re unvaccinated or if they haven’t received a booster shot if they’re eligible. Teens 16 and over are now eligible for a booster shot in the U.S. DHEC recommends getting tested on day five following exposure.
