Coronavirus live updates Sept. 16: Fewer than 15 cases added to Horry County’s count

Coronavirus cases jumped by 13 Wednesday in Horry County and one additional person has died of the virus, health officials announced.

The latest numbers bring Horry County’s total positive tests to 9,793 since mid-March. COVID-19 has led to 184 deaths in the county, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

While DHEC’s daily news release lists 19 new virus cases, the department’s map indicates an increase of 13 from Tuesday’s numbers. Officials have said the map is the more accurate number.

Following a spirited debate in Horry County council Tuesday, members voted to extend the county’s mask mandate, meaning people are required to wear a mask or face covering when in public in unincorporated Horry County.

Here are the latest updates on the coronavirus in the Myrtle Beach area Sept. 16:

Georgetown County has reached 1,767 total COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, and 41 people have died of the virus in the county, DHEC reports.

South Carolina has reported 131,428 virus cases. Across the state, 2,968 virus-related deaths have been reported, according to DHEC. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 1,172,000 tests have been reported in the state, according to DHEC. On Tuesday, 3,635 coronavirus tests were reported to DHEC, 13.5 percent of which were positive, according to a news release from DHEC.

Wash your hands & wear a mask

This is your daily reminder to wash your hands often, wear a mask and practice social distancing.

DHEC asks people to wear a mask when visiting public places and practice social distancing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is now mandatory to wear face masks in certain public areas in unincorporated Horry County, the City of Myrtle Beach, the City of North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown County.

Health officials say washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
