Coronavirus live updates Sept. 11: Myrtle Beach area sees nearly 70 new cases
Coronavirus infections in the Myrtle Beach area continued to grow with 67 new cases in the county.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control announced the latest case data on Friday afternoon. Horry County now has a total of 9,617 COVID cases since the pandemic started in mid-march.
The county has also seen 181 COVID-19 related deaths.
Here are the latest updates on the coronavirus in the Myrtle Beach area Sept. 11:
Horry County’s COVID-19 case count is up from the 9,550 infections reported in Thursday’s update. A DHEC news release indicates 33 new cases in Horry County, but the online map shows 67. Health officials have said the online map provides the most accurate data.
The count has completed 78,415 coronavirus tests since the pandemic started. About 16.5 percent of the test have been positive, according to DHEC data.
Roughly 60 percent of all coronavirus deaths in Horry County have been in white individuals. About 16 percent of deaths in the Myrtle Beach area were black individuals. The average age of the people who have died is 73 years old.
There has been a total of 1,750 COVID-19 cases in Georgetown County, with 39 deaths. Statewide, there have been 125,792 cases and 2,877 deaths, according to DHEC data.

DHEC asks people to wear a mask when visiting public places and practice social distancing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is now mandatory to wear face masks in certain public areas in unincorporated Horry County, the City of Myrtle Beach, the City of North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown County.
Health officials say washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
