Coronavirus live updates Aug. 9: Myrtle Beach area sees nearly 40 new COVID-19 cases

Coronavirus numbers continued to grow in Horry County with an additional 39 cases Sunday.

South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control officials say the Myrtle Beach area has seen a total of 8,562 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic started in mid-March.

There have been 148 deaths in Horry County from coronavirus. Two new deaths in middle-aged people were announced Sunday.

Here are the latest updates on the coronavirus in the Myrtle Beach area:

In the last week, Horry County has seen a total of 20 new deaths from the virus.

Georgetown County’s total case count now sits at 1,454 with 19 deaths.

Across South Carolina there have been 99,713 total cases and 1,949 deaths. About 76 percent of ICU hospital beds across the state are occupied, according to DHEC.

People aged 21 to 30 years old make up about 20 percent of all COVID-19 cases in South Carolina, according to DHEC. Women account for about 52 percent of the total cases.
